Sunset at Haleakala – Solitude Among the Stars

Sunset at Haleakala – Solitude Among the Stars

You don’t expect to find peace standing on a volcano of all places. You think, maybe I’ll get a good photo of the sun or two, or a thousand. You think of (or forget) the lava way, way beneath you and when this hot spot might get going again, hopefully NOT in our lifetime. As popular Hawaiian myth goes, the volcano goddess Pele created the Hawaiian Islands through the forges of lava. Also according to legend, Haleakala – Maui’s dormant…

Things to Do on Maui in December

Things to Do on Maui in December

Christmas on Maui may sound preposterous to some — from the outside looking in, the Valley Isle doesn’t exactly call to mind wintry holiday vibes — but December in Maui happens to be one of the most splendid times on the island. While the rest of the world may be experiencing some of the coldest days of the year, Maui sees remarkably beautiful weather (with just the right amount of bite and breeze), Humpback whales have returned to its shores,…

A Christmas in Hawaii will be a lot warmer, that’s for sure. Where else would you get the luxury of a day at the beach this time of year? Day 6 – Kohala Waterfalls Adventure with Hawaii Forest & Trail

This is a part of our 9-day Big Island Itinerary. Saturday, December 30. We are going on Kohala Waterfall Adventure with Hawaii Forest & Trail. When I was doing research on what we could see on the West side of the Big Island, I noticed great reviews for Hawaii Forest & Trail. This company specializes in the Big Island, they don’t have too many tours but theirs are about education as well as beautiful scenery. The company was founded by…

Road to Hana Itinerary

Road to Hana Itinerary

We traveled on Road to Hana two times in the past. One of those times, long time ago, we bought a self-guided tape and followed all the directions and made all the stops recommended on it. Another time, we stopped less and drove faster so that to spend more time in ‘Ohe’o Pools. As this was our third time, we knew what exactly we wanted to revisit, plus we leafed through one of Maui Guidebooks we found in our vacation condo to…

Lulumahu Falls Trail

Lulumahu Falls Trail

Lulumahu Falls Trail is about 2-2.5-mile round trip of moderate difficulty. This adventurous hike through the bamboo forest ends at a fantastic little piece of paradise with a swimmable waterfall. The trail is located on private land, owned by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, and technically a permit is needed to hike here. Most people don’t obtain the permit. Be aware that the trail is unmarked and hard to follow. I hope this guide will help you find your way…
